The self-help writings of multiples [an autonym of people with multiple personality disorder (MPD)] echo contemporary debates about multiculturalism in curious ways. One self-identified multiple, for instance, encourages nonmultiples to treat different alters courteously when they express themselves in a person with MPD. The writer also notes that many multiples experience real distress because their distinct alters are of different religions, races, or sexual orientations that cannot coexist happily because of mutual intolerance [see Dissociation: An Informal Look from an Insider (FAQ document, UseNet newsgroup alt.support.dissociation) by Discord and Sapphire Gazelles, 1994].
